“Innovations made of rubber”, this is the principle of ok Gummiwerk. Since our founding in 1928, we have been on a daily search for innovative ideas. This applies to our products for the shoe industry, for orthopedic shoe technology, as well as for the wide range of technical rubber molded parts that we develop and offer for a large quantity of customers.
This also applies to our production processes and the raw materials we use. Environmental protection and resource conservation are at the top of our priority list.
In the last years, we have therefore stepped up our efforts in the following areas:
- Product-oriented compound developments in which renewable raw materials are increasingly used
- Product-oriented compound developments in which recycling components are increasingly being integrated
- Waste avoidance strategies through the process chain
- Energy savings
- Production of particularly high-quality and thus long-life articles
- Development of new articles specifically used to repair footwear that would otherwise be disposed.
Many of these activities are not new, and sustainable thinking and action are an integral part of our company philosophy. For example, for decades we have been using our own elastomer powder, which is produced when rubber sheets are grinded on the back. Following a circular approach and the ideas of resource efficiency, many of our compounds contain a product-specific proportion of this elastomer powder. This avoids waste and preserved raw material resources.
Ecological aspects are also becoming growing important in the market for our products. Our customers are asking for sustainable and environmentally friendly products. This has prompted us to have our many future-oriented activities evaluate and certified by a neutral, external Institute.
The renowned PFI (Prüf- und Forschungsinstitut Pirmasens e.V.) had our production processes, our production documentation and our products analyzed by an accredited auditor. During an on-site visit, the compliance with social standards, occupational health and safety requirements and, of course, environmental standards was checked. They were also impressed by our quality management and the energy-saving measures we have implemented. As a result, the ok Gummiwerk is now the first German rubber company to be awarded the “100% ECO” seal. We are a little proud of that!
